Joyce McDonald Kicks Off Campaign for Congress on Tax Freedom Day

April 24, 2014 By The Suburban Times

Joyce McDonald will kick off her campaign for U.S. Congress in the 10th District on Friday, April 25th, 6:30 PM at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club in Lakewood.  This is the same day The Tax Foundation has identified as Tax Freedom Day for Washington State citizens.

Tax Freedom Day is the day when workers have finally earned enough income to pay the required taxes to all different levels of government for the current year. It’s called Tax Freedom Day because from that day on you theoretically work for yourself and not the government.

Joyce McDonald decided to run for Congress largely because of the failures of Washington D.C. to implement simple and reasonable policies to help move our economy forward.  Joyce says, “The federal debt is now over $17 Trillion. I can’t look at my grandchildren and say I did nothing to stop the federal government from mortgaging their futures.”

Currently, the federal government uses tax policy to hurt our economy in two main ways.  First, government is consuming too large of a percentage of our economy, specifically the disposable income of middle-class families. Second, government uses the tax code to pick winners and losers by creating exemptions and loopholes for special groups, thus creating a reliable source of votes and campaign contributions. Those tax burdens then shift to hard working, middle-class families.

Joyce supports moving towards a simplified and more equitable tax code which treats all American’s more fairly.  “The economy would grow faster, and the federal government would actually take in more revenue, if they took a lower percentage of income from a broader tax base,” McDonald said.   She continued, “Instead of D.C. continually fighting over who is and is not worthy of special treatment, why don’t we simplify and de-politicize our system for collecting the revenue needed to run our federal government.”

Join Joyce for her Tax Freedom Day Congressional Campaign Kick-Off Event on Friday April 25th, 6:30 PM at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club (13204 Country Club Dr SW, Lakewood, WA 98498).  Moving towards a less burdensome and more equitable tax system is just one reason why Joyce is a Better Choice!
