On Sunday March 8th, twenty firefighters representing WPFR participated in and finished the 23rd Annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb. As of today, WPFR has raised $12,976 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and this number will continue to grow until the end of the month when fundraising officially ends. Out of 188 fire departments who participated in the event, the WPFR team placed 3rd overall and was the fastest team from Washington State.
The event was held at the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. The building is 788 vertical feet in elevation. To participate in this event firefighters must climb 69 flights of stairs and 1,311 steps in full bunker gear.
This year West Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters climbed in memory of John Moore who passed away after a year-long battle with Leukemia on November 3rd 2013. John was a beloved family member of West Pierce Firefighter/Paramedic Brian Browning. They also climbed in honor of Cole Vukich who is the 7-year old son of West Pierce Firefighter Steve Vukich and his wife Brooke. Cole was diagnosed at two with Biphenotypic Acute Leukemia. He continues to get stronger on his long road to recovery and is a living inspiration to all that know him.
