The Pierce County Regional Council honored the South Sound Military & Communities Partnership with the first “Working Across Boundaries” Award on Thursday night at its General Assembly presentation in Puyallup.
Josh Brown, Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council, presented the award to Dan Penrose, Program Manager for SSMCP, and JBLM Commander Col. H. Charles Hodges Jr., who accepted the award on behalf of the many partners in Pierce and Thurston counties.
The award recognized SSMCP’s success bringing together regional interests on issues such as traffic congestion on Interstate 5 and support for transitioning service members.
“We’re especially pleased to receive this award on behalf of Lakewood and the surrounding communities,” Mayor Don Anderson said. “Our relationship with JBLM is a very important one. It is that relationship that will help both our civilian and military populations move toward the future effectively.”

Directors Meet With JBLM Counterparts
This week, several directors and managers with the City visited Joint Base Lewis-McChord to meet with their counterparts who work on base. With Lakewood being the host community to the base, both the City and JBLM decided it would be beneficial for City directors to learn what their base counterparts do on a daily basis and vice versa. The City Manager delivered a presentation on the state of Lakewood, while JBLM Commander Col. Charles Hodges Jr., summarized structure and activities at the base. Afterward, some directors from the City learned about and even tried their hand at simulated training that soldiers typically experience, including shooting and rolling over in military vehicles.
Assist in Orting Homicide
Lakewood Police Investigative personnel assisted Orting PD thru CRU (the Crime Response Unit) during its recent homicide investigation of a man who was fatally shot in his front yard.
Business Site Visits
The Economic Development team met with companies this week – one in finance and the other auto repair. Both serve clients throughout the state. We continue to be reminded of the exceptional companies and individuals that we enjoy here in Lakewood. We’re a community that cares and wants to help those in need. For example, who would think that a bank would be concerned about finding ways to assist lower income clients to find assistance with their utility bills?
Habitat for Humanity is building another home in Tillicum on Portland Avenue. Cohasset Imports has taken up shop on 32nd street near the 512 Business Park. There are remodeling projects going on around town including the McDonalds on 100th, and the Starbucks on Main Street. Popeye’s restaurant is about to begin construction on a new restaurant in Tillicum at 15201 Union and a new espresso stand is also planned for Tillicum.
Parks, Recreation and Community Services
The City met this week with an ad hoc stakeholders group – comprised of representatives from City advisory boards along with community and business members – to start developing a vision for “Lakewood Gateways.”
Although the group will create a vision that can be used for all of Lakewood’s gateways, the outcome for this specific process will be an improved gateway at Bridgeport and Pacific Highway. Their goal is to improve the look and feel when you come to Lakewood. Besides the many visitors coming to the area for the U.S. Open in June 2015, an improved entry and image of Lakewood may have an effect on future tourism and economic development. A community meeting is scheduled for late March or early April to develop a preferred design option (including project costs, as well as funding and phasing options) that will be shared with Council at the conclusion of this process.
Work Crew Helps With Fallen Barn
Last week, the Work Crew assisted Park staff in securing the fallen barn at Fort Steilacoom Park off from visitors, who could have potentially harmed themselves because the barn roof wasn’t fully collapsed. This was another example of the collaborative work relationship between Parks and the Work Crew.
