U.P. Historical Society Meeting set for February 12

February 10, 2014 By The Suburban Times

By Howard Lee

Our regular monthly UP Historical Society meeting will be held at 7pm next Wednesday, February 12th, in room D-2 (next to the UP Museum), in Windmill Village (City Hall complex).

After a very short business meeting, our guest speaker Peggy Rose Webster, who is the Chairman of the 27th Street Business Association and owner of Total Image Solutions, will bring us up to date on how the 27th Street Business Association is attempting to improve the business image of our great City.

So now you ask, “What does this have to do with the historical society?” With the collective memory of our meetings attendees, we want to create a list of historic buildings/businesses that exist or did exist within the footprint of the 27th Street Business Association. For starters, Willow Tree nursery exists in a 1930’s retail building from which Mario Santelli of Mario’s Landscaping did business. Then there is the building dating back to 1900, which now is the home of Hap’s Auto. Hm-m-m-m what else lurks in the history of the 27th St businesses?

This information is important because a list of historic structures is the first requirement in becoming a Certified Local Government. The Certified Local Government Ordnance and its importance will be briefly explained during the meeting. It has importance not only to those interested in preserving our historic and cultural resources, but also to taxpayers.

While this meeting will probably not be as entertaining as others we have had, or plan to have, your inputs will be important to the implementation of an ordnance which will ensure the preservation of historic structures here in University Place. Besides, Barbara promised us chocolate in honor of the historical holiday, Valentine’s Day!

You individual attendance at our next meeting is important not only to the historical society but our city, too
