Lochburn Middle School seventh-grader Christina Alo won Achieve3000’s “Make the Break” winter holiday contest for Washington state. Clover Park School District uses the online Achieve3000 program to help students improve reading and writing skills.

Students who wanted to participate had to complete four lessons over winter break and have an average activity score of 75 percent or above to be entered into the drawing. Alo’s name was chosen for Washington state; she will receive an iPod Shuffle from the company. More than 20,000 students across the country qualified for the contest.
“I really enjoy using Achieve3000,” said Alo. “A lot of the information is very interesting.”
Alo’s teacher Malinda Hayne said she saw immense improvement in Alo’s reading and writing skills since she started using the program last year.
“I’m very proud of her,” said Hayne. “She took it upon herself over the winter break to work hard and stay motivated.”
