Clover Park High School (CPHS) Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets mentor Park Lodge Elementary School students as part of the “Big Cadet, Little Cadet” after-school program. Cadets visit the Lakewood Family YMCA after-school program at Park Lodge twice a week. On Tuesdays, the cadets help the elementary students with homework and, on Thursdays, they play games and do other physical activities with them. This is the third year of the program.
“It’s really fun to work with the students,” said sophomore Athziri Macias. “They may not have someone at home who can help them with homework.”
The cadets serve as role models for the elementary students and show them the importance of volunteering in the community and helping others.
“It’s really a win-win for the cadets and the elementary students,” said Lt. Col. Gary Roberts, CPHS JROTC instructor. “The students benefit from a having a positive role model and the cadets learn how to work with younger students.”Print This Post
