As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Deelyn Cheng presented information on emergency preparedness to students in four of the Communities In Schools Lakewood (CISL) after school programs. The Clover Park School District schools were Tilicum Elementary School, Lochburn Middle School, Tyee Park Elementary School, and Southgate Elementary School. The primary objective of the presentation is to raise awareness among students and to encourage them to discuss with their family a plan for emergency situations. In her presentation, Deelyn described the basic preparation for situations that are common in our area such as severe winter storms, thunderstorms, and earthquakes.
She talked about what to do in the event of an emergency such as calling 911 and sheltering in place. She conducted a show and tell of an emergency kit. Each presentation ended with a game of relay runs where students selected an essential item that should be in the emergency kit. The presentation to the schools was made possible through the advice and cooperation from many individuals in the community. Very special thanks to Leah Livingston, Mike Olson, Annelise Smith and Daniel Nego for helping coordinate the presentations with CISL and to Pierce County Emergency Management for lending the demo emergency bucket and providing activities packets for the students.
Another element of this Gold Award project includes establishing a food system for the City of Lakewood mobile emergency trailer. The plan, which has been approved by the City of Lakewood, is to develop a menu then furnish the trailer with non perishable food that will serve one hundred people for three days during an emergency. In addition, Deelyn will work on promoting the furnished trailer and emergency management program at schools and family events in the local community. If any individual or business wishes to make a donation toward the purchase of food supplies for the trailer, please contact Deelyn’s project advisor, Mary Dodsworth of the City of Lakewood.
