Ruffner to create artwork for upcoming flower and garden show

Seattle-based artist Ginny Ruffner will complete a residency at Museum of Glass from Thursday, January 2 through Sunday, January 5, during which she will create pieces to be displayed at the 2014 Northwest Flower and Garden Show as part of her collaboration with the Arboretum Foundation. Her residency will conclude with a lecture in the Hot Shop on Sunday, January 5 at 2 pm. The lecture will also be streamed live on the Museum’s website.

Each year, the Arboretum Foundation presents a horticultural display at the Northwest Flower and Garden show. This year, the Garden Show’s theme is “Art in Bloom.” The show’s Garden of Artful Delight will pay homage to Ruffner and her home and studio.

The artwork in the display garden will be a mix of pieces from Ruffner’s home garden and new pieces that she will create at the Museum in January.

A longtime friend of the Museum, Ruffner recently had her artwork exhibited in Northwest Artist Collect at Museum of Glass, which ran from January 19 to October 27, 2013. She also completed a Visiting Artist residency in March of 2013.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome back Ginny Ruffner to the Museum,” notes Executive Director Susan Warner. “Ruffner is considered a pioneer in glass art, so we are very excited to see what she will create for the Northwest Flower and Garden Show.”

Ruffner received both her BFA and MFA from the University of Georgia and taught the first flame-working class at the Pilchuck Glass School in 1984.

Her work is in the permanent collections of over 30 national and international museums, including Carnegie Museum of Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
