All-Comers Community Christmas Sing and Play Along:
Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 15, 2013 and attend a free community concert or perhaps take part in it as well. From 6 to 8 p.m. at Steilacoom’s Town Hall, anyone who can sing or play an instrument is invited to join your friends and neighbors for the annual all-comers community Christmas sing and play along. No prior rehearsals are necessary. Just bring your musical instruments, music stands and enthusiasm.
All ability levels welcome. 4-part music and song sheets are provided. Come and enjoy an evening of beautiful Christmas music produced by our own community! All participants and attendees are invited to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. Non-perishable food will be collected for our local food pantry.

Comprehensive Plan Update:
Your input is needed to update to the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. Over the next several months, the Planning Commission will review the Comprehensive Plan by topic, and public input is vital to the success of this exercise. Remaining topics to be covered are; Economic Development on January 13, and Transportation on January 27. All meetings will be at 6:30 PM in the Town Hall, 1717 Lafayette Street. Saltar’s Point Park:
Saltar’s Point Park remains closed. If anyone notices trespassers on the beach, please contact Public Safety using the non-emergency number – 253 798-4721. Staff continues to work with BNSF officials pursuing design of a replacement structure.
Staff will be meeting with representatives of AT&T on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of placing a cell tower at the well site in Cormorant.
A conditional offer was made to a lateral candidate. His anticipated start date is January 2, 2014.
Public Safety will be performing traffic emphasis patrols along Union Avenue focusing on speeding, failure to come to a complete stop at stop signs, and driving while distracted.
Sgt. Rodriguez and PSO Derig had SWAT training this week. Sgt. Rodriguez assumed command of the Metro SWAT team Thursday night.
New radios for the vehicles acquired through South Sound 911 were delivered to Systems for Public Safety Thursday. The radios will be installed in the vehicles over the next several weeks.
Streets and Storm:
Sequalish Street Project;
Work continues on the new water main between Main Street and Chambers Street. Next week, the contractor will begin installing the sewer main from Union Avenue to Chambers Street. The contractor is currently planning on not performing major work the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
We are currently reviewing an option to extend the planned improvements on the unpaved portion of Wilkes Street south of Sequalish Street up to Washington Street. Staff will bring additional information to Council at their January meeting.
Lafayette Street Bid Opening:
The Lafayette Street project bid opening is Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Staff anticipates bringing a recommendation for award to Council at their January 7th meeting.
The crew focused on right-of-way maintenance along with snow and ice control.
The crew installed two permanent services; one on Cincinnati Street and the other in Sunset Crossing. They also installed a temporary service in the 200 block of Montgomery Street, coordinated with the Sequalish Street contractor, repaired the heater in the Town Hall kitchen, and performed utility disconnection/reconnections.
The Crew repaired three frozen water meters, installed a new service at 2106 Lafayette Street, coordinated and inspected the water main work being performed on Sequalish Street, and performed other system maintenance.
Parks and Grounds:
The Cedar Creek work crew performed grounds maintenance at the Public Works facility. Town crews thawed and repaired the water line at the Community Center kitchen and performed other facility maintenance related to adverse weather conditions.
The Kiwanis Winefest is scheduled for January 24, 2014 at the McGavick Center. Tickets are $40 each and are available from any Kiwanis member and/or at the Public Works Building front desk.
