LAKEWOOD, WA – Starting Monday, December 9, Pierce Transit will introduce two new Express Custom Bus routes as a six-month demonstration project. The Express Custom Bus Demonstration Project is the Agency’s second major demonstration project since the Board’s strategic focus for the Agency shifted to innovative and tailored community solutions. The success of the first project, the Get-Around-Gig Harbor Trolley, led to Board approval to continue the seasonal Trolley service from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend, beginning in 2014.
Express Route 475 features two early morning trips from University Place to Olympia and two return trips in the afternoon, stopping at two Sounder Stations along the way. The service departs Drexler Drive & 35th Street West at 4:29 a.m. and 5:29 a.m. weekdays. Fares for one ride, beginning January 2, 2014, are $3.00 for Adults/Youth and $1.50 Discounted Fare. A monthly Regional Pass is $108.00 for Adults/Youth, and $54 discounted fare with a regional reduced fare permit.
Custom Route 485 offers two northbound trips in the morning and two return trips in the afternoon between Olympia and Puyallup, with stops at Martin Way Park and Ride and Hawks Prairie Park and Ride. The service departs the Olympia Transit Center Bay L at 5:45 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., and departs the Puyallup Benaroya Business Park at 3:35 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. weekdays. Fares for one ride beginning January 2, 2014, are $4.50 for Adults/Youth and $2.25 for discounted fare. A monthly Regional Pass is $162.00 for Adults/Youth and $81 discounted fare with a regional reduced fare permit.
The new Express Custom Bus routes are designed to meet the unique needs of commuters, support Pierce County employers, and ease congestion on SR 512 and I-5 during weekday morning and afternoon commutes. Free Wi-Fi service, provided by Singlepoint, is available onboard and will be tested on several other Pierce Transit coaches in 2014.
Riders are invited to get acquainted with the new routes and ride for free from December 9 – December 31, 2013. After the New Year’s Day holiday, service resumes on January 2, 2014 and fares will be collected. Fares may be paid with ORCA cards or cash. Valid transfers have a value of $2 for adults and 75 cents for seniors, youth or disabled passengers.
