Steilacoom Town Administrator’s Friday update, Nov. 22

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Council Meeting –  December 3, 2013 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall.
  • Preservation and Review Board –  November 27, 2013 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall.
  • Civil Service – December 6, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Community Center
  • Planning Commission – December 9, 2013 at 6:30 PM at Town hall.

Council Future Agenda “Look-Ahead” Issues:

  • Copies of the Agenda and staff reports are available at all Town facilities once published.
  • The Agenda and Council meeting minutes are posted to the Town’s official website.

Town Offices:

Town offices will be closed Thursday November 27th and Friday November 28th.

TIB Award:

It appears the Town was selected for funding by the Transportation Improvement Board for a grind and overlay project on Chambers Creek Road.  Based upon the TIB Project Selection listing published today.

The estimated project cost is $659,200 with a TIB funding level of $400,001.  Staff will follow-up further next week and provide additional information once available.

Parks’ Task Force Work Party:

On Sunday, November 24th, the Parks’ Task Force will be hosting a community work party to remove invasive species and other weeds at the Chambers Street entrance to Farrells Marsh.  All are invited to participate from 1 PM to 3 PM.

Lafayette Street Construction Project:

Authorization to Proceed from FHWA through WSDOT Local Programs was obtained on Thursday.  The project was posted to the Builders’ Exchange and was and is scheduled to be advertised in the DJC on November 22 and December 4th along with the TNT on November 25th and December 9th.  The bid opening is scheduled for December 17 at 10:30 AM.

Report Street Light Problems:

As daylight hours are beginning to get shorter, it is a good time to check your neighborhood street lights and help us identify those that are not working and need to be repaired.  To report a street light outage or other problem, please record the nearest street address and contact the Public Works Department at 253.581.1912.  Repairs may take up to 1-2 weeks to complete.

Saltar’s Point Park:

Saltar’s Point Park remains closed. If anyone notices trespassers on the beach, please contact Public Safety using the non-emergency number – 253 798-4721. Staff continues to work with BNSF officials pursuing design of a replacement structure.

Comprehensive Plan Update:

Your input is needed to update to the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. Over the next several months, the Planning Commission will review the Comprehensive Plan by topic, and public input is vital to the success of this exercise. Remaining topics to be covered are Housing on December 9; Economic Development on January 13, and Transportation on January 27. All meetings will be at 6:30 PM in the Town Hall, 1717 Lafayette Street. More information is available from Town Planner Doug Fortner at 581-1912 or doug.fortner@ci.steilacoom.wa.us.

Public Safety:

DUI Award/Recognition:

Officer Bailey and Chief Schaub will be attending the DUI Award dinner tonight in Fife.  Chris was our top DUI enforcement officer for 2013.

Staffing:

The Chief requested an additional 20 names of entry level candidates.  An oral board is scheduled for December 3rd for these individuals.  A special Civil Service Commission meeting is scheduled for December 6th to add the passing names to the entry level register.

Training:

Public Safety Officers Webb, Whelan, Derig have officer tactics training scheduled at the station on the 27th.  This will include certifying 3 officers in the use of our “Less Lethal” shotguns.

Other:

Metro SWAT will be bringing one of the armored vehicles to store at Public Safety.  The vehicle was previously stored at a West Pierce Station in Tillicum.

Public Works:

Streets and Storm:

Joey Hollow Development:

Staff continues to work with the developer/contractor to complete the utilities, road work, and other infrastructure.  Cement treatment of the roadway base is scheduled for Saturday.  Staff will be on-site to perform inspections while the work is being performed.

Sequalish Street Project;

Work continued on the sewer main between Main Street and Pacific Street.  Additionally, the retaining wall at the ball field is under construction and PSE continues to relocate their facilities between Chambers Street and Union Avenue.  We anticipate this work will continue for the next several weeks.

Crew Emphasis:

The crew focused on preparing for picking up the Christmas and preparing for snow and ice control.

Electrical:

The crew replaced drive-line bushing for two pumps at the Sunnyside pump station, repaired a half-power situation at a residence in the 2300 block of Oak Street, installed permanent power to a new home in the 2500 block of Cincinnati Street, and performed inspections at Joey Hollow.

Water/Sewer:

Crew Emphasis:

The Crew attended three days of training on basic electrical issues with water/sewer systems, inspected a sewer main extension on Lafayette Street, and performed inspections at Joey Hollow.

Parks and Grounds:

The crew repaired the backbone trail stairs, installed trail signs at Western Road and Tatoosh Lane, cleared the Madrona Park trail to Chambers Creek Road, and performed other parks and building maintenance.

General:

Kiwanis Winefest:

The Kiwanis Winefest is scheduled for January 24, 2014 at the McGavick Center.  Tickets are $40 each and are available from any Kiwanis member and/or at the Public Works Building front desk.
