Governor appoints new trustee to Bates board

November 10, 2013 By Bates Technical College

TACOMA, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee has appointed Lillian Hunter to Bates Technical College’s Board of Trustees. She fills the position vacated by Stan Rumbaugh, who departed following a successful election to the Pierce County Superior Court last year.

Hunter has a long and distinguished career in education in Washington state. She currently serves as the director of West Sound Technical Skills Center, one of the state’s 13 skills centers. Hunter previously served as principal and assistant principal in Tacoma School District, and assistant principal and career and technical education coordinator in Peninsula School District.

Prior to entering administrative positions, Hunter was an instructor for dental assistant programs at Clover Park Technical College, Highline Community College and as an evening instructor at Bates Technical College. She was also a career and technical education teacher at Lincoln and Washington high schools, and a career and technical grants coordinator for the East Pierce County School District Consortium.

Hunter is active in her community, currently serving as a Tacoma Public Library trustee, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the William H. Factory Small Business Incubator. She has been active in numerous community organizations, including Tacoma Citizens for Schools, Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, Tortured Artists Film Festival, Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund Drive, Tacoma Art Museum, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and as an advisory board member for dental programs at Clover Park Technical College.

Hunter holds a master’s degree in education from City University and a bachelor’s degree from The Evergreen State College. She also earned a post graduate certificate in executive education leadership from City University and a certificate in dental assisting from Clover Park Technical College.

A five-member Board of Trustees governs Bates Technical College. The governor appoints each trustee, who serves a five-year term. Learn more about college governance at www.bates.ctc.edu/Governance.
