LAKEWOOD – At 12:55 a.m., West Pierce Fire & Rescue was dispatched to an apartment fire at the Morningtree Park Apartments, located at 8101 83rd Avenue SW in Lakewood. Crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from the front of the unit and residents being evacuated. It was reported two people were in the apartment where the fire started and were later confirmed as fatalities by firefighters’ search efforts.
“There was a 64 year old male inside and a 78 year old female and they are believed to be husband/wife,” reported Lt. Chris Lawler from the Lakewood Police Department. “We are not identifying them at this time, since next of kin notifications have not been made.”
Firefighters put a quick stop to the fire and while three other apartments sustained smoke damage, the fire did not spread to any other units. Six people have been displaced and the Red Cross is assisting them. Smoke alarms were present in the unit where the fire started, but it is unknown whether they were working at the time of the fire.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue would like to remind residents to check your smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly. If you live in University Place or Lakewood and do not have working smoke alarms in your home, please call (253) 564-1623 to schedule an appointment. A grant funded program allows smoke alarms to be installed by firefighters in homes at no cost.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
