Thousands of children read more than 90,000 hours of books, magazines and other materials this past summer during Pierce County Library System’s Summer Reading program.
Dig into Reading participants earned reading prizes, including a free pass to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium or Northwest Trek, and a Round Table Pizza coupon.
Children who read 15 hours could enter a drawing to win an iPad Mini, a gift from Pierce County Library Foundation. The iPad Mini grand prize winners include:
- Maggie Gilmore, 9, Auburn. Maggie enjoys reading books and listening to audiobooks from Milton Pierce County Library. Her favorite series is Harry Potter.
- Morgan Pratt, 8, Lakebay. Morgan’s home library is Key Center Pierce County Library. She especially likes Wimpy Kid and Judy Moody books.
- Hannah Smith, 8, Puyallup. Hannah read up to the very end of Summer Reading, choosing her books from Summit Pierce County Library.
Teenagers are also an important audience for the Library’s summer reading program. This past summer, nearly 600 teens participated in the online Teen Summer Challenge. They earned badges and mastered achievements, interacted with friends, read down library fines, and shared reviews of books, movies, music and places.
Pierce County Library Foundation awarded an iPad to teen winners randomly selected from the badge earners. The winners of the iPad grand prize were:
- Sydney Paulsen, 15, Sumner Pierce County Library
- Alex Wright, 14, Lakewood Pierce County Library
Macy’s, MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Simpson, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Wells Fargo and 17 local businesses sponsor Pierce County Library’s Summer Reading program, along with donations to Pierce County Library Foundation and Friends of the Libraries.
