Obituary Notice

September 11, 2013 By The Suburban Times

Richard R. (Blackie) McCarthy

May 30, 1930 – Sept 5, 2013

Blackie, 83, a resident of Tacoma, WA, passed away on September 5, 2013 surrounded by his family who loved him very much. He was born May 30, 1930 in San Jose, CA and grew up in a large family with many brothers and sisters. He told lots of humorous stories about his interactions with them.

He worked at various jobs around the San Jose area. In 1967 he started dating Mary-Alice (Pam), and in November 1968, he married the love of his life. Together, he and Pam raised their 7 children. They moved back to Pam’s hometown, Tacoma, Washington in May 1969.

In the mid 70’s his first grandchild arrived. And from then on his treasure chest continued to fill with 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He loved his family, especially the babies, before they learned to say “NO” and ask “WHY”.

In 1969 he started his career at Glenco as a heavy equipment mechanic, where he quickly became the “shop dad” that everyone went to for help – including lunch money – and he was always willing to help them.

He settled into the task of raising their family of 7 kids, each of which he loved very much. As a young man he enjoyed taking his family camping at hood canal. And also added in some road trips to San Jose, CA. They would pack the station wagon full, and go to California for a couple weeks of visiting family and friends. These were always highlights of his summers.

In 1996, he retired and after taking a short time off, went to work part time at K&M Wholesale where he did deliveries. He enjoyed working there and developed some very close relationships with them.

After his retirement he and Pam were able to enjoy their time together and have fun. And they were able to fulfill their dream of traveling to Ireland and England.

He enjoyed many years of good health in his retirement. For the last 10 months, he fought a courageous battle with cancer with no complaints.

On September 5, 2013 he went Home to collect his Heavenly Reward.

We miss you and love you, Punky, Dad, Grandpa, Grampy, Uncle Blackie and Friend.
