At its September meeting Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees will discuss Lakewood Pierce County Library’s 50th anniversary, the 2014 budget, landscaping at Steilacoom Pierce County Library, and other issues. The Board of Trustees will meet at the Library’s Processing and Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., in Tacoma, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Lakewood Library 50th Anniversary: Lakewood Pierce County Library turned 50 this year. To celebrate years of serving the community from this location, Pierce County Library System and FRIENDS of Lakewood Library hosted a free 50th anniversary celebration Aug. 4-17. The Library System invited residents to share their library story, the City of Lakewood presented a proclamation, Lakewood Historical Society gave a talk about the history of Lakewood and the Library, and community members learned through a photo exhibit about changes to the building and to library services throughout the years. More than 365 people participated in the culminating event on Saturday, Aug. 17, with free events for all ages and remarks from community leaders about Lakewood Library’s history and impact in the community.
2014 Budget: Library managers will share estimated revenues and expenditures, as well as information concerning an anticipated $1 million shortfall, as the Library plans for the 2014 budget. At the October Board of Trustees meeting, managers are expected to share proposals to address the budget shortfall. In November the Board will conduct its first public hearing on the budget, with the second and final public hearing scheduled for the December Board meeting. The Library is rigorously evaluating its operations to ensure it is providing customers with valued services. In December 2012, the Board of Trustees adopted the Library’s 2013 budget, with an operating budget of $25,423,927 and $1,632,000 for capital improvements.
Steilacoom Library landscaping: The exterior landscaping project at Steilacoom Pierce County Library is complete. The Friends of the Steilacoom Library worked with the Library System to design the concept, and provided funding for its completion. The improvements provide a welcoming environment to customers, who can now enjoy the space for Wi-Fi access, conversations, and outdoor reading. The work, which features a paver patio, overhead awning, and new seating, has received positive feedback from the community.
The Library serves 555,000 people in all of unincorporated Pierce County and 15 cities and towns.
