Lakewood: Point Defiance Rail Bypass Project workshop

August 27, 2013 By The Suburban Times

Please take notice that the City of Lakewood would like to conduct public workshops to review the current status of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Point Defiance Rail Bypass Project. This Project proposes to reroute Amtrak passenger trains to an existing inland rail line route along the west side of I-5 through south Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont. When completed, it would bring a total of seven daily round trip passenger trains through Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont intersections, with an average crossing time of 45 seconds per intersection and a maximum speed of 79 mph.

The workshops will:

Review the current status of Point Defiance Project, including timelines; and
Inform interested parties on the City’s lawsuit to halt the rerouting of Amtrak trains through Lakewood.

There is no guarantee that the City will be successful in its lawsuit. So, as a part of the workshops, the City would like to have a conversation with interested parties on possible mitigations designed to lessen the impact of high-speed trains.

This Workshop is for those properties adjacent to the railroad tracks from 108th Street SW to Gravelly Lake Drive SW. The Workshop shall be conducted on September 4, 2013, beginning at 6:30 PM, at Lakewood City Hall City Council Chambers, 6000 Main Street SW. Additional workshops will be conducted along other segments of the railroad line.

For additional information, please contact Becky Newton, Economic Development Specialist at 253/983-7738, or e-mail at bnewton@cityoflakewood.us.
