Jamicka Jones, Steilacoom High School’s Bookkeeper as well as a member of the Washington Association of Educational Office Professionals (WAEOP) attended the 79th Annual Conference and Institute of the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) in Alexandria, Virginia, July 22-26, 2013. She was accompanied by 25 other Washington State members.
At the General Session on July 23, 2013, a flag presentation of each state was conducted. During the week participants enjoyed tours in and around the Washington, DC area. The delightful and interesting speakers and conference personalities highlighted the conference. Jamicka was also a participant in the first Speaker’s Bureau training which provided two days giving her tools she will need to become a great and successful speaker not only for the organization but throughout her life. She looks forward to being able to share her new skills with others in the district and around the state. In the annual business meeting, Jamicka was nominated and elected to be on the National Foundation Board’s Scholarship Committee. During her time in VA, she was also able to meet Washington State Senator Patty Murray as well as Washington State Congressman Denny Heck . Her time in VA also included a visit from her younger sister Anita Miller (also a previous Savanna resident) and nephew Xavier and Azaria who drove from Fort Bragg, NC to stay with her for a couple a days and tour Washington D.C. together.
During the Professional Standards Program Banquet, members received certificates of accomplishment. The Professional Standards Program is a certification program for educational office professionals to upgrade themselves both professionally and personally. The PSP program is sponsored by NAEOP and endorsed by American Association of School Administrators, Association of School Business Officials, National Association of Elementary School Principals, and National Association of Secondary School Principals. Jamicka will earn her PSP certificate this coming spring and will be recognized at the Washington State Annual Conference to be held in Olympia, WA in April 2014 as well as the Annual National Conference to be held in Portland, OR in July 2014. She is hoping to recruit new members to the organization and is more than happy to share of her experiences thus far as well as answer any questions.
Jamicka is a previous resident of Savanna, IL and graduated from Savanna High School in 1997. She currently resides in Lakewood, WA with her husband Adon and their 3 sons, J’Don, Jamal, and Absalom 2. She believes that because she chooses to surround herself around positive people in her community and the support they provided her from high well as into adulthood has allowed her to continually find ways to give back to communities where she has resided. Her involvement in organizations such as FHA- HERO now called FCCLA- Family, Career, and Communities Leaders of America has continued to spark interest and participation in a similar organization now as an adult connecting her with others who work in the same job field in education.
