Two new schools on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) will open this September and two more school construction projects have recently started. Construction on a fifth and sixth new school will begin a year from now. The construction of new elementary schools on JBLM improves the local economy in Lakewood and Tacoma, as well as surrounding cities and counties.
Construction began on Carter Lake Elementary and Hillside Elementary Schools in July 2012. Both schools will open Sept. 3 for the 2013-14 school year. Construction of Clarkmoor Elementary and Greenwood Elementary began in July 2013, which will make these two new facilities operational in time for the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. Additionally, Beachwood Elementary and Evergreen Elementary are anticipated to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.
These construction projects will inject nearly $150 million into the economy over a three-year period. The projects benefit many companies including architects, engineers, ironworkers, carpenters, electricians, masons, drywall workers, plumbers, roofers, metal workers, painters, landscapers and others. More than 80 companies have been contracted with and utilized for the Carter Lake and Hillside Elementary School projects. Many of these companies are based in Pierce County. The resulting effects of the projects will generate capital for these companies. This capital can further stimulate other sectors of the economy, ultimately leading to local tax revenue.
