Some of you may have noticed a new boat spraying water along the waterfront. “Endeavor,” is West Pierce’s new fire boat and was purchased utilizing grant funds. This boat was acquired to be utilized as a regional response vehicle covering the South Puget Sound area. Since the boat was commissioned on May 1stit has gone on several responses throughout Pierce County.
Most recently the boat responded to a brush fire that started on the beach on Fox Island on July 22nd. The Endeavor provided firefighters with a better angle from the water side to attack the fire, therefore it was contained much quicker than if there had strictly been firefighters on the ground.
The Endeavor also responded to an incident under the Narrows Bridge, a recreational boater with an engine fire, an overturned kayak and a significant fuel leak where the Endeavor’s crew assisted the Coast Guard to deploy a boom for spill containment. There was also an incident in Gig Harbor where a patient was injured on the beach and the best access to the patient was to utilize the fire boat. The patient was treated for her injuries, packaged and loaded onto the boat. She was then taken by the Endeavor to an awaiting shore based medic unit and transported to the hospital.
Each of these incidents had better outcomes due to the existence of the fire boat. West Pierce’s Endeavor provides a speedy response to incidents in our area and in an emergency, whether it be a fire or a medical aid call, seconds can count.
