The Pierce County Council voted unanimously to appoint Deputy Prosecutor Kevin McCann to be a judge on the Pierce County District Court. District Court handles over 175,000 cases a year, including misdemeanor criminal offenses, traffic infractions and lawsuits.
“The council made a wise and principled decision to appoint Deputy Prosecutor McCann who has a proven record of public service,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “His work ethic, integrity, and sense of fairness will serve our community well.”
McCann was selected from a field of 17 applicants. He was one of the three top tier candidates recommended to the council by the ad-hoc committee that interviewed and screened the candidates for appointment. He received a rating of Exceptionally Well Qualified from the Tacoma Pierce County Bar Association.
“Kevin McCann’s community relationships and civic involvement made him a stand-out among the candidates,” councilmember Dan Roach said.
McCann, formerly the lead attorney for the felony homicide team, has been with the prosecutor’s office for over 17 years. He supervised the burglary and drug teams, and has tried cases of aggravated murder, domestic violence, rape, robbery, and child abuse. After the 2009 murder of four Lakewood police officers by Maurice Clemmons, McCann was the lead attorney in the prosecution of the Clemmons Seven,holding accountable those who rendered criminal assistance. In addition to working as a deputy prosecutor, McCann served a variety of courts as a pro-tem judge for the past decade.
“I am honored to be selected from an impressive group of qualified candidates,” said McCann. “I look forward to continuing to serve the community in my new role as judge.”
In addition to his public service as a deputy prosecutor, McCann is extensively involved in our community. He won the “Hunger Warrior” award from Lawyers Helping Hungry Children in 2012, spent 10 years as a Werlin reading tutor, and served three years as a board member of Faith Homes.
McCann lives with his wife Lynda and their three daughters in Tacoma.
