KBTC Public Television reels in its 10th Emmy Award

June 27, 2013 By The Suburban Times

By Chelsea Lindquist, Communications Specialist, Bates Technical College

TACOMA, Wash. – For the sixth consecutive year, KBTC, a service of Bates Technical College, has won an Emmy Award from the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Tom Layson, producer and host of KBTC’s Northwest Now, a weekly, locally-produced public affairs program, accepted the statuette at the awards ceremony on Saturday, June 15.

Winning in the category of Public/Current/Community Affairs-Program/Special, Northwest Now’s episode “I Do” takes on the gay marriage debate, and features studio guests Joshua Friedes, director of Marriage Equality, Equal Rights Washington, and Joseph Backholm, director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington. This episode also examines the controversial Hide/Seek portrait exhibition at the Tacoma Art Museum.

“We are proud of the outstanding work Tom Layson has done with Northwest Now and are honored that KBTC has been recognized for this excellent program,” said KBTC Interim General Manager and Executive Director Ed Ulman. “Northwest Now serves as a great example of the high-quality programming KBTC is dedicated to providing in our community.”

Considered the industry’s most prestigious and highest honor, the Emmy Award recognizes excellence in television programming. KBTC has won 10 Emmy Awards and has garnered more than 20 Emmy nominations since 2007. You can watch the entire Northwest Now episode of “I Do” here.
