U.P.: Destination Art Open House

May 29, 2013 By Ben Sclair

By Debbie Klosowski

A public open house to view proposals for a “Destination Artwork” to hang in the UP Civic Building is scheduled for this Saturday, June 1, from noon to 2p.m. in the Civic Building Atrium.

UP for Arts is spearheading the campaign to obtain a significant piece of artwork for the Civic Building.

The nonprofit group, which is responsible for numerous art pieces and cultural events, approached the City Council last summer with a proposal to add a “finishing touch” to the Civic Building.

No tax dollars are being requested; instead, UP for Arts plans to launch a fundraising campaign after a proposed artwork is approved by the City Council.

A nationwide call to artists was sent out last year and resulted in several initial submissions.  An art evaluation team narrowed the list down to two artists who are submitting final proposals for consideration.

After the public open house, the arts evaluation team will submit a recommendation to be forwarded onto the City Council for approval.
