Tyee Park Elementary recently received a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries to purchase bilingual library books for the school’s library. The books are written in Spanish and English. Library media specialist Sue Hockett applied for the grant last year. The Laura Bush Foundation provides funds for school libraries to purchase books.
“For our Spanish-speaking families, this will further encourage parents to read to their children,” said Hockett. “The hope is that students will develop a love of books and reading that will help them throughout their academic career.”
The books were unveiled during the grand opening of the bilingual section of the library April 26. This coincided with the school’s “Día de los Libros” celebration, which was paid for by a Title I parent involvement grant. Families learned about the bilingual books, listened to Spanish-speaking storytellers and enjoyed a meal from a local Mexican restaurant.
Next school year the Tyee Park library will open a half hour early and close a half hour later to encourage families to visit the library and check out books.
