By Karen & Gary Duggins
We wish to share our story & pictures today of a wonderful Arbor Day celebration demonstrated by Brownie Scout Troop 40081 Third grade girls and their Troop leader Julie Brubaker who arranged for this event (her Second grade girls were on a field trip) by planting 27 fingerling Douglas & 3 Grand fir trees. We met at Cherrydale School where the Troop was released in Mrs. Brubaker’s charge and Karen & Gary Duggins provided the fingerling trees for planting as well as tools & other supplies.
Mark Burlingame from the Town of Steilacoom graciously provided dirt, wood chips, planting water, gloves, wheel barrow & drinking water for the Brownie Scouts.
Bruce Parker from SHSD#1 approved of all the planting areas on School ground property in the wooded area of Cherrydale School, and Mark Burlingame for the Preserved Cherrydale Woods area, which are managed by the Town of Steilacoom.
We were very fortunate to spot a Trillium flower in blossom just on the South side of the D St trail to the school and that is the picture of Mrs. Olson, the Cherrydale Counselor, with the Brownies all pointing at the flower.
It was a wonderful experience for the girls and they all named each tree they planted with a boy or girl name, they had tons of fun and we did good civic duties of picking up any litter laying about that people recklessly tossed away harming the woods and its natural beauty.
Thank you to Mrs. Brubaker for asking Mr. Burlingame for an Arbor Day task, thereby directing her to Councilwoman Mrs. Henderson, head of Parks & Trails, who included the Duggins’ into the project who provided the trees, to Mr. Burlingame again for being so gracious to the girls and he and Bruce Parker of the SHSD#1 in helping to locate planting areas.
All turned out beautifully, the girls were returned to school at the stroke of 3PM as promised and all were very pleased with their giving back to Nature on Arbor Day; what a nice thing for a Brownie Scout Troop to do. Congratulations to them all and especially to Mrs. Brubaker for doing such a great deed for the Community & our Nature.
