Girdy: UW Tacoma Annual Spring Fest to feature local bands

April 23, 2013 By Ben Sclair

By Ashley Walker

TACOMA – You may not know the word “girdy,” but you’ll know it when you hear it. At least that’s the idea behind Girdy: UW Tacoma Annual Spring Fest that students are hosting on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the Longshoremen’s Hall at the University of Washington Tacoma.

According to student Nathan Pelland, the word describes something that is both good and dirty. It also happens to sound like the nickname of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, “Galloping Gertie.” Pelland is organizing the event as the Student Activities Board’s Entertainment Coordinator.

Girdy: UW Tacoma Annual Spring Fest will showcase local talent and vendors, and focus on a local theme to bring the spirit of Tacoma to the students of UW Tacoma and the public. The festival is set to host local bands including Ben Union and The Fame Riot, both from Tacoma; Down North from Seattle; and Village from central Washington.

The event is sponsored by the UW Tacoma Student Activities Board, the Campus Event Fund and Bleach, a clothing store on Pacific Avenue.

Tickets will be available online starting April 8 at Brown Paper Tickets  (girdy.brownpapertickets.com) and admission is free for all UW Tacoma and Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) students. General admission is $15 per ticket.

Girdy happens in the Longshoremen’s Hall on the UW Tacoma campus at 1710 Market Street in Tacoma. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
