WellCity Award of Excellence:
The Town of Steilacoom met the AWC Trust’s WellCity standards and received the WellCity Award of Excellence. WellCity has three levels of recognition to encourage program growth and longevity. Town staff earned the WellCity Award of Excellence. This highest level of recognition requires a minimum of 141 points earned by performing or having in place activities, policies, and/or programs which promote healthy lifestyles, the completion of all required items, and earning the award in three consecutive years.
The WellCity award results in a 2% discount on Regence/Asuris medical premiums for those employee groups covered by those plans in 2014.
Thank you to Wellness Committee members Pauline Monk, Micki Sterbick, and Denise Bollman for spearheading this project and to all of the Town employees who participated.
Public Safety:
Metro SWAT Oversight Committee:
The Metro SWAT Oversight Committee selected Sergeant Rodriguez to succeed Lakewood Police Department Assistant Chief Zaro as the Team Commander later in 2013. He will begin training for the position during the summer.
First Response:
On April 5th, Detective Yabe responded to a medical aid call in Town. He arrived and began CPR after the AED advised not to shock the patient. West Pierce Paramedics arrived moments after he initiated CPR. As a result of a fantastic team effort between Detective Yabe and the West Pierce medics, the female patient was revived and transported to the hospital.
Staffing:
We have tentatively scheduled a lateral police officer oral board on April 25th.
Public Works:
General:
Sequalish Street Reconstruction Project:
An Open House for the public is scheduled for April 23, 2013, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Town Hall. All are invited to come, review, and discuss the project with Town staff and our engineers.
A utility coordination meeting is scheduled for May 8, 2013. This meeting is limited to Town staff, our engineers, and utility purveyors, and is essential to ensure coordination of all of the underground utilities. This corridor has many conflicts which will need to be resolved.
Public Works Facility Reroof:
The contractor began staging equipment and materials for the reroofing of the Public Works facility. We anticipate the project should last approximately two weeks depending upon the weather.
Seasonal Hires:
The first round of interviews for seasonal workers in the Public Works’ Department was Friday. We anticipate filing one six-month position and four three-month positions.
Streets and Storm:
The Crew vactored catch basins and flushed storm lines through-out Town.
Electrical:
The Crew continued installing battery backups for the telemetry system.
Main and Lafayette Street Electrical Projects:
These projects were advertised beginning April 8th. The projected bid closing date is April 24th.
Water/Sewer:
The Crew performed hydrant maintenance and attended a hydrant maintenance certification conducted by the Washington Environmental Training Center. This course qualifies for continuing education units applicable to waterworks certification. The supervisor completed an underground fuel storage certification course required by recently adopted legislation.
Parks and Grounds:
The Crew assisted an Eagle Scout candidate by stripping the concrete forms from the pad poured last Saturday and they delivered materials for the next phase of the project.
The Cedar Creek Work Crew worked at the Public Safety/Community Center complex assisted by our crew who also spent the remainder of the week maintaining the parks around Town.
