Story & Photo – Joseph Boyle
Last evening I was driving through Lakewood when I noticed that my old friend, Angelo Scalici, has a For Sale sign on our historic Lakewood House of Donuts located at 9638 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood, WA 98499. Phone: 253-588-2647.
This news hit me especially hard since I have law enforcement background and have consumed donuts professionally for over 20 years.
There just is no better place to buy good “eaten” donuts than our Lakewood Donut Shop.
They started making donuts at this location in 1959. That is when you could buy a donut for 5 cents or a jelly filled fancy donut for 7 cents.
It stands to reason that after making millions of donuts our local donut makers possess a high level of expertise in making these little round delights.
I called Angelo and he gave me the good news. At this time, it is just the land and the building that are for sale. The donut shop is still pumping out those savory and much sought after treats with a hole in the middle.
When my East coast family visits, they do not drive directly from the airport to see me. No, they drive directly to the donut shop for some maple bars. East Coasters are certainly “have-nots”. They cannot buy maple bars where they live.
Let’s consider this article a public service notice. If I were you, I would scoot on down to the House of Donuts and treat yourself to some scrumptious donut products while you still can. It will make you feel young.
If you have always wanted to own a donut shop, give Angelo a call at 253-376-5384. I have known Angelo for close to 40 years. He is an honest Italian with an impeccable business reputation. Tell him the Irishman sent you.
Oh, one more thing. If you do not intend to keep the donut shop open, do not buy this property.

Best part about working the West Precinct 20+ years ago, was when someone was late to day shift turnout, they’d have to bring donuts for the squad from this shop.

Great article, Mr. Boyle. It made me laugh out loud. I’m an Italian, originally from the East coast, who knows all about you Irish cops. Thank you for your service!!!

Joe, let’s buy it. You’ll need something to do when you retire.

Great article, Joe.
However, to quote you:
“There just is no better place to buy good “eaten” donuts than our Lakewood Donut Shop.”
I think you’re eaten too many doughnuts. They’ve gone to your brain.
However, I agree that we need to do all to preserve this landmark house of really good eatin’.

Used to go in and get my ‘breakfast’ on the way to school when I had an extra dime. So-o-oo good.
My youngest just acme back from 5 years in Kuwait and he and his wife went to *shudder*, that east coast place that makes facsimiles of donuts and brought a doz. home. I almost choked! I did try a bite out of courtesy, but it was tough to do. HE WILL GO TO ‘OUR’ DONUT HOUSE when next time we need some. And it will be soon.
I hope a buyer is found who will carry on the legacy.
