JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – The 14th Engineer Battalion will case its colors in preparation for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in a ceremony on Thursday, June 23, 2 p.m., at Memorial Stadium on JBLM Lewis-Main.
The 14th Engineer Battalion’s primary mission in Afghanistan will be route clearance. This is the fourth time the unit has deployed in support of the Global War on Terror. Previously, the battalion has deployed three times to Iraq. This is the unit’s first deployment to Afghanistan.
More than 600 personnel will deploy with the battalion. The 14th Engineer Battalion is part of the 555th Engineer Brigade at JBLM.
On Thursday night, June 23, the 14th Engineer Battalion will be honored at the Tacoma Rainiers game. The battalion will provide the color guard for the National Anthem. Army Specialist Patrick Rickard, 24, who is the 14th Engineer Battalion and 555th Engineer Brigade Soldier of the Year, will throw out the first pitch. Rickard entered the Army in March 2009 from Billings, Mont., and is a combat engineer. Three months ago, he graduated from the Warrior Leader’s Course at the Henry H. Lind Noncommissioned Officer Academy on JBLM.
