Kim Prentice of Lakewood Rotary announced the Teacher of the Month from the Clover Park School District at the club’s May 20 meeting. Custer Elementary teacher Nicole Wonner earned her bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and her master’s degree from City University. Most recently, she has become nationally board certified. Her colleagues describe her as compassionate, committed and caring. This year Nicole recognized that parents of Custer Elementary School English Language Learners needed to learn English themselves. She wrote a grant to offer free English classes to parents. The grant was funded by district Title I monies and the class began in January and lasted for 10 weeks. Two days each week, the course was taught by staff from the Tacoma Community House. One day per week volunteers from the Custer Elementary School staff met with the students for “Talk Time,” which gave the students an opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills. Nicole spent countless hours organizing snacks, dinners, volunteers and childcare for each evening. Nicole accepted the award by acknowledging the many staff members at Custer and in the District who spent countless hours helping her on the project. Lakewood Rotary recognizes one teacher each month from the Clover Park and Steilacoom school districts each month, and teachers such as Nicole who see the problem, fix the problem are a perfect fit.
