Pierce County hospitals and various agencies are participating in an exercise on Wednesday, May 18, that will test their emergency response to multiple terrorist activities.
Allenmore, Good Samaritan, Mary Bridge, Tacoma General, St. Clare, St. Joseph, St. Anthony hospitals, Western State Hospital, the Veteran’s Hospital at American Lake, Madigan Medical Center, and the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department will drill on how to respond to bomb threats, bomb detection and a utility tampering at several hospitals. The exercise will take place between 8 a.m. and noon. The exercise scenario begins with an unknown explosion at the County-City Building.
Other participants will include the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management, Puyallup Emergency Management, law enforcement agencies from Tacoma, Puyallup and Lakewood, and several dispatch agencies. This is one of the largest cooperative hospital exercises in Pierce County.
Hospitals are required to hold bi-annual exercises or drills to retain their Joint Commission Hospital Accreditation. For the past several years, the hospitals have teamed up with other local agencies to test communication and treatment capacity across the Pierce County region.
