The Ginger Root Fundraiser Rummage Sale

May 11, 2011 By Ben Sclair

Ginger (Root) Garrison-Magoon was a 1995 graduate from Lakes High School. Last year, she was diagnosed with oral cancer, and recently died. A Ginger Root Fundraiser Rummage Sale will be held May 21-22 (9 am-5 pm) at 115 S. 117th St in Tacoma to help her family pay funeral costs and to bring awareness to the need for medication for low income families.

After applying for the state medical, she was told she made a few dollars too much. In reality, her family just barely scrapes by each month. At last, with the help of some wonderful people, she received this medical. However, after having major surgery including losing most of her tongue and the rest of the problems that went with the surgery, it was very difficult to eat table food. She needed nutritional drinks and also stomach acid reducers which were very expensive. There was no room in her budget for these extra medicines that were not covered by her insurance.

Because of seeing our friend and other friends going through this, we were inspired to hold our first annual fundraiser to benefit this woman and others in our community. At one time or another
in our lives, we have seen the devastation that being low-income and having cancer can cause a person as well as their family. Other organizations are looking to the future for a cure which is a necessity and greatly applauded; however, we want to assist those that can’t afford the non-prescription necessities today.

Since preparing for this Rummage Sale, Ginger has passed away. We are asking for donations to assist her family with the funeral expenses. We have officially opened our account through Washington State Employees Credit Union. Those who want to donate may do so by depositing to the GingerRoot Fundraiser C/O Washington State Employees Credit Union. We are also accepting donations of nutritional drinks, vitamins and stomach acid reducers. Thank you all for your support! Please call Christine Walker at 253.304.5031 or email at gingerroot2@yahoo.com. We are on Facebook also!!
