Subject to Board approval, Steilacoom Historical School District #1 announces the appointment of Monica Sweet as the new principal of Steilacoom High School.
“I am excited to join the Steilacoom High School community and will begin making the transition with staff, students and community members this spring,” said Ms. Sweet.
Ms. Sweet started her educational career after graduating from Central Washington University in 1993 with a degree in English and psychology. After spending a year at Mt. Si High School in Snoqualmie Valley teaching English and debate, she relocated to Lacey, Washington, where she spent nine years teaching middle school language arts, technology, and drama.
Monica earned her principal certification from Seattle Pacific University in 2003. She went on to become the assistant principal at Nisqually Middle School for the 2003-2004 school year, where she enjoyed working with students, staff, and the community to help create a positive school culture.
After her year as assistant principal, Monica became principal of Chinook Middle School, where she spent five years working to build a powerful teaching and learning plan to increase academic rigor and improve student achievement. Two years ago, Ms. Sweet was appointed to the role of principal at Aspire Middle School, where she had the opportunity to plan and open Thurston County’s first magnet performing arts middle school.
Ms. Sweet’s experience and track record of encouraging strong student performance, fostering an academic program that also values the arts and community involvement, makes her well qualified to become the next leader of Steilacoom High School.
She formally assumes her new leadership role on July 1.
JAMES says
The introduction of Monica Sweet has already started an up roar. Board member voted to have the current assistant principle to move up. The superintendent has upset the community with choosing a inexperienced art teacher. This decision is costing teachers their jobs by not havingn suppport in Mr.Fritz. Cutting after school power trainning which is beneficial to not only the athletes but, the students health. She should stay in the middle school and, leave the high school to Mr.Lowry.
not it says
James,
You must be one of the students affected by this decision. Judging from your non-grasp of the written English language and your lack of comprehending that Language Arts doesn’t equate to ‘inexperienced art teacher,’ I’d be willing to bet that Steilacoom HS is getting some of what it needs. Study harder, understand that maybe she’s better qualified for the job than the Asst. Principal you like (and did he want the job, by the way?), and be prepared to learn some more about life and dealing with different sets of people.
Cheers.
