Pierce College concert season opens with guest recital May 1

Pierce College Puyallup will kick off its spring concert season with a celebration of the new star of the music program, the Steinway grand piano.

The new addition will be dedicated with a special guest recital by Robin McCabe, one of the nation’s most celebrated pianists, at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the Arts and Allied Health Theatre, 1601 39th Ave. SE. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students (Pierce students with ID are free).

McCabe has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Japan, and often appears as an invited jurist for international piano competitions. She served 15 years as the director of the School of Music at the University of Washington. She is currently teaching at UW through the prestigious Donald Petersen Endowed Professorship. Her recital is sponsored in part by Steinway pianos.

Pierce’s new piano is a semi concert grand, the second largest in the grand piano family. A beautiful instrument, it is described as a “workhorse” that can meet the demands of an educational atmosphere.

“The new piano is a wonderful addition to the campus,” said Jere Knudtsen, director of Pierce music programs. “It will be appreciated by musicians for a very long time and it’s a great honor to have Dr. McCabe here for the dedication.”

The recital kicks off the spring concert season at Pierce College. Three additional concerts are planned in the coming weeks.

• Jazz Expo featuring the Jazz Expo All-Stars, 7 p.m. Sunday, May 22. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $5 for students, and free for Pierce students with ID. Concert tickets include admission to afternoon music clinics.

• Of Music and Life: Pierce College Choir Concert, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 3. Tickets are for $5 general admission and free for all students.
