New Aktion Club seeks adults with disabilities

April 24, 2011 By Ben Sclair

A different kind of service club is being organized in Lakewood.  A new Aktion Club will provide service and leadership opportunities for adults who are living with disabilities. The Aktion Club is being organized by the Kiwanis Club of Clover Park in association with Greater Lakes Mental Health.

The mission of Aktion Club is to provide members with an opportunity to develop initiative and leadership, serve their community, become more fully integrated into society, and demonstrate the dignity and value of citizens with disabilities.

“Individuals who live with disabilities often have skills but little opportunity to develop or apply them,” says Aktion Club advisor Betty Knauf.  “Aktion Club will give these individuals opportunities to interact socially and make positive contributions to society.”

Action Clubs are active in a growing number of communities.  They meet once or twice per month, elect their own officers, and plan their own projects.

Some Aktion Clubs are conducting car washes and recycling projects to raise funds for community needs.  Others are sponsoring hands-on service projects such as park beautification, food drives, and nursing home visitations.  Aktion Clubs are also providing social and educational opportunities with visits to zoos, museums, and sporting events.

Membership in the new Aktion Club of Lakewood is open to any adult living with a disability who has a desire to serve the community and benefit others through volunteering.  For more information about membership, contact Betty at: cpaktionclub@gmail.com or leave a message at (253) 579-3695.

Aktion Clubs are the newest sponsored program of Kiwanis International.  Kiwanis clubs also sponsor K-Kids Clubs for elementary school students, Builders Clubs for junior high and middle school students, Key Clubs for high schoolers, and Circle K clubs for collegians.  Altogether, the Kiwanis family of service clubs totals almost 500,000 adult and youth volunteers.

An informational meeting for those interested in membership or desiring more information will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Clover Park High School in Room 108.  Please use the main entrance to the school on Gravelly Lake Drive SW.
