Celebrate the Arrival of Spring at Lakewold Gardens

April 20, 2011 By Ben Sclair

LAKEWOOD – Spring is quickly approaching and what better way to celebrate its arrival than at Lakewold Gardens’ annual MayFest event. With the gardens in full bloom, Lakewold is planning a weeklong celebration May Day to Mother’s Day with horticulture and art displays, membership and admission specials, Mother’s Day Weekend events and extended open hours.

“Many of our visitors list a spring trip to the gardens as a ‘must do’ activity. With our garden partners showcased in the Wagner House, MayFest is a great week to make that annual visit before the busy summer schedule sets in,” says Stephanie Walsh, Lakewold’s Executive Director, “and this is the perfect week for newcomers to experience the 10-acre garden estate.”

Open May 1 – May 8 from 10am – 4pm, visitors can enjoy the following events and specials:

  • May 1: John James Audubon’s Birds of America Display 10am-4pm & Presentation at 1:30pm
  • May 1: Yesterdays Chevelles & El Caminos Car Club Car Show 12pm-4pm
  • May 1-May 8: Keith Phillips Stonework Display 10am-4pm at The Garden Shop
  • May 1-May 8: Membership Special – 50% off any membership level
  • May 2: Admission Special – admit two for the price of one
  • May 2-May 8: Lakewood Arts Commission Art Exhibit 10am-4pm
  • May 3-May 6: Ikebana International #147 Flower Display
  • May 7: ‘Meet the Artist’ Keith Phillips 10am-2pm & Origami star-making at 12pm at The Garden Shop

Rounding out the celebration is a weekend of events dedicated to mom. Join us on Saturday, May 7th at 1:30pm for A Garden Tea with Lucy Hardiman presenting Bodacious Borders. This three-course tea is accompanied by a delightful presentation by nationally recognized garden writer and designer Lucy Hardiman. Tickets for this event are $50 for members and $57 for non-members. On Sunday, May 8th is Lakewold’s annual Mother’s Day Brunch at 11am. Attendees will enjoy a buffet-style brunch and a stroll through the gardens – truly the perfect setting for celebrating such an extraordinary day.

Brunch pricing is $50 for members, $57 for non-members, $20 for children 3-12, and free for children 2 and under. As seating is limited for both events pre-paid reservations are required. Catering is provided by Occasions Catering & Special Events for Lakewold’s Mother’s Day Weekend events.

Standard admission fees apply to most MayFest activities unless otherwise noted. Admission fees for Lakewold Gardens are: $7 for adults, $5 for senior/student/military, and free for children 12 and under. Please contact Amanda Wood at 253.584.4106, x108 to make a reservation for our Mother’s Day Weekend events or for more information. Sponsorship for MayFest is generously provided by AA Party Rentals, Columbia Bank and Occasions Catering & Special Events.

Lakewold is the place to be anytime of year, but springtime is so wonderful. You will feel your spirits lifted, you burdens lightened, and your urge to connect with nature renewed. When’s the last time you took a friend or loved on on a picnic. If your gardens not ready, Lakewold’s is always ready. ENJOY!
