Dollars for Scholars

April 13, 2011 By Ben Sclair

By Jaimie Garrett

Cobalt Mortgage has recently founded and initially funded the first corporate Dollars for Scholars chapter in the United States. Our mission is to provide opportunities for local high school students through post-secondary scholarship awards. Rising costs are closing doors to higher education for many individuals in our community. Through Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars we have the opportunity to make a strong, collective statement about the importance of education beyond high school. Read on to find out more about Cobalt Mortgage’s Dollars for Scholars program, as well as how to get involved.

Q: Who may apply for a scholarship?

A: In our inaugural year, Cobalt Mortgage’s Dollars for Scholars program is focusing on children of current and past clients, as well as members of the Boys & Girls Club for these opportunities. Scholarships can be for two-year, four-year, or vocational and technical colleges.

Q: How are local scholarships awarded?
A: Students must complete a scholarship application and submit it by May 1st. To receive an application form, please contact us. Applicants receive points for a variety of qualities, including work experience, school and community service activities, and academic record. In this way, the selection process is objective and nondiscriminatory making scholarships available to a wide range of deserving students planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.

Q: How are funds for local awards provided?
A: Cobalt Mortgage is invested in our Dollars for Scholars chapter beyond just founding it in our name – as a company, Cobalt has independently funded the start-up of our chapter and scholarship fund in order to improve the lives of the youth in our community through further education. However, we can’t do it alone. Each year our community is invited to join us in demonstrating their support for local students through a variety of fundraising activities. Funds also come from the generous support of local businesses, service organizations and individuals.

Q: How can I help?
A: Anyone in the community can help Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars through contributions, donations and volunteering. Your cash contribution of any amount, or tangible item donation, reflects your pride in our students and your commitment to their ongoing education.

Share your time, talents, skills and ideas! Some of our most important donations are donations of time and effort. We invite you to help us with any of our fundraising events throughout the year. Together, through Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars, we have an opportunity to invest in our greatest resource, our youth.
