The filing deadline for federal income tax returns is Monday, April 18. There is still free help available for late filers:
- AARP Tax-Aide at the Lakewood Library on Friday, Apr 15 from Noon to 4pm and Sat, Apr 16 from 11am to 3pm. Walk-in only.
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offered by South Sound Outreach Services at the United Methodist Church at Lakewood, 6900 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, on Wed, Apr 13 from 3pm to 7pm by appointment only. Call 253-593-2111.
- VITA at the Gary & Carol Milgard HOPE Center, 10402 Kline St. SW, Lakewood on Thurs, Apr 14 and Mon, Apr 18 from 2:30-6:30. Walk-in only.
Don’t delay! If you wait until April 18, you may be assisted in filing for an extension so that you can take a little more time to properly prepare a more complicated income tax return but you are still responsible for paying any expected tax owed by the April 18 deadline.
A list of other free volunteer tax assistance sites around Pierce County can be found at www.piercecountyabc.org, along with a link to “ICan! e-file”, free online self-tax preparation and e-filing software provided by our trusted partner, The Legal Aid Society of Orange County. Other tax software and fillable tax forms can be found at www.irs.gov .
These services are targeted to help low-wage working individuals and families, and low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Each year partner organizations of the Pierce County Asset Building Coalition have helped low-income taxpayers prepare and file their returns, learn how to effectively handle their finances, and build savings and personal prosperity.
