Kainen Bell has been named a $2,500 college scholarship winner for the Money Matters: Make it Count program provided by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Charles Schwab Foundation. Bell, an 11-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, was selected because of his successful completion of the Money Matters financial education program and achievement in acquiring and applying personal finance knowledge and skills.
In addition, Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound will receive a matching grant of $2,500 from Charles Schwab Foundation to help fund the Club’s work in continuing to provide Money Matters to Club youth.
Bell, who is a senior at Stadium High School and a member of the Al Davies Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs, was recently named the 2011 Washington State Youth of the Year and will be competing for the BGCA Pacific Region title this summer in California.
Bell will be joining the 4 other finalists, including the National Money Matters Ambassador, Megan Wurm of Nevada, in New York April 14th as part of Financial Literacy Week at the New York Stock Exchange. The teens will be a part of Discovery Education’s live webcast of the event.
“Financial literacy is one of the foundations securing a great future,” said Mark Starnes, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound. “Money Matters teaches basic financial skills and concepts in a way that is meaningful to teens. Kainen has done an exceptional job with the program and has truly incorporated what he learned into his life.”
The Money Matters program is available to the 2,900 Boys & Girls Clubs that serve teens and helps Club members learn the basics of money management, including budgeting, wise use of credit, saving and investing. Money Matters also features a Schwab employee volunteer program, which encourages Schwab employees to share their financial expertise with teen Club members and their families.
Nineteen other Boys & Girls Club teens are also being awarded Money Matters scholarships this year. To date, the Money Matters program has reached over a quarter of a million teens in 1,600 Boys & Girls Clubs. Charles Schwab Foundation has awarded 187 college scholarships, totaling $390,000, since the program’s inception in 2004.
