The Lakewood Police Department reported Friday, April 8 that Maalo Samaota was taken into custody Friday afternoon by the U.S. Marshalls in the Portland, Oregon area. He is currently in custody on a Lakewood PD murder warrant in the Multnomah County Jail. Lakewood Homicide Detectives have traveled to Oregon to question him about the homicide. The extradition process will be started this week. Following is an April 6 news release with a bit more information.
The Lakewood Police Department received a tip in March about a possible homicide which was reported to have occurred in July of 2010 within our jurisdiction. The investigation has led to the arrest of one subject believed to be involved in the crime. It has also led to the identification of Maalo Semu Samaota as the main suspect in that homicide. A warrant has been issued for Samaota. It is possible he is or was in the Portland, Oregon area.
This was a crime that involved kidnapping and a murder. A video obtained by detectives shows a subject, now believed to be Samaota, taunting and torturing a bound person with a knife. Maalo Samaota should be considered extremely dangerous and he should not be approached.
Citizens are asked to call 911, Tacoma-Pierce County Crimestoppers at 253-591-5959, or the Lakewood Police Department at 253-830-5064 if they see him or know of his whereabouts.
