Civics Week at Pierce College

College Civics Week is April 11-15 and both Pierce College Puyallup and Pierce College Fort Steilacoom have a full docket of activities scheduled, including visits from Secretary of State Sam Reed, State Auditor Brian Sonntag, and Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson. Here’s a first look at the activities that week. All are free and open to the public.

Pierce  Puyallup

  • Volunteer Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 11, College Center building – Many non-profit organizations will be on campus providing opportunities and raising awareness of service projects in the community.
  • Civics with Secretary of State Sam Reed, 3 p.m. April 11, Multipurpose Room (College Center building) – No other county votes like Pierce County. Learn more about this and other civic topics from Secretary of State Sam Reed and special guest Julie Anderson, Pierce County auditor.
  • Getting Involved with County Executive Pat McCarthy, noon April 12, Multipurpose Room (College Center) – Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy will discuss county services and programs.
  • Open Lecture: In the Modern American Military with Floyd Churchill, noon April 13, Multipurpose Room (College Center) – History Professor Floyd Churchill will deliver a lecture on the American military and modern forms of warfare. Refreshments provided.

Pierce Fort Steilacoom

  • Secretary of State Sam Reed, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. April 11, Cascade building, Room 332 – Learn more about the importance of student involvement in local and state politics from Secretary of State Sam Reed and special guest Julie Anderson, Pierce County auditor. Anderson is scheduled to speak from 1:40 to 2 p.m. Reed will follow at 2 p.m.
  • State Auditor Brian Sonntag, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. April 13, Blackbox Theater (Cascade building) – Learn more about the auditor’s office and the role of citizen involvement. Refreshments will follow.
  • Volunteer Fair, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14, fourth floor Cascade building – Interested in volunteering? Connect with local non-profits and learn about current volunteer projects and opportunities.
