The Tacoma Nature Center (1919 South Tyler Street, Tacoma WA 98338 – 253-591-6439) is open Tuesday – Friday 8 am-5 pm & Saturday 10 am-4 pm. Following are a list of events to be held in April 2011.
Tacoma Nature Center Just for Kids
Nature Alphabet – Ages 3-6, $6 per child, $5.00 per member child, Adults free. Preschoolers explore different nature topics through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks and crafts at the Tacoma Nature Center. Adult participation is recommended, children under four require an adult present. Please note alternating times. Advance registration required.

Nature Yoga – Ages 1-6, $6 per child, $5.00 per member child, Adults free. Fun, child-centered activities and nature poses are combined with time-honored yoga practice to guide children and an adult partner through warm-up, work-out, strengthen, cool down and relaxation. Adult attendance is required. Participants may bring yoga mats or use those provided. Sponsored by Source Yoga.

Nature Discovery Hour – Ages 2-7, $3 per child, $2.50 per member child, Adults free. Explore our new Discovery Pond play area with a Nature Guide during this reserved time. Special activities and nature discovery aids will be available. Adult participation is required, but there is no fee for adults.

Homeschool Science. Homeschool students explore science through hands-on experiments and activities. Register early – these classes fill quickly! Note – topics are repeated during the month, so select class appropriate for your child’s knowledge and abilities. Beginning Science – Ages 8-10, $12 per student, $10.80 per member child. To participate in this class, students should be able to add and subtract numbers.

Intermediate Science – Ages 10-12, $12 per student, $10.80 per member child. To participate in this class, students should be able to multiply and divide numbers, add and subtract fractions.

Advanced Science – Ages 12-15, $15 per student, $13.50 per member child. Older homeschool students will continue their science studies with challenging and engaging experiments and activities. To participate in this class, students should be able to calculate averages, percentages and solve simple equations.

Snake Lake Science Club – Ages 10-14, $5 per club meeting, $4.50 per member child. Snake Lake Science Club for homeschool and other students age 10-14 years old who want to learn more about science and the natural world. We will also focus on helping students prepare for the 2011 Snake Lake Science Fair. Register and pay per club meeting in advance to ensure a place.

Earth Day Extravaganza – April 23, 10:00am – 4:00 – Ages 4 and up, FREE. Celebrate the earth with fun family activities that help you learn about the earth and how we can all keep it healthy! Featuring: Beautiful Butterflies, Creepy Crawlies and Wiggly Worms! Parking is limited, please carpool or use alternate transportation.
Girl Scout Badge Workshops – Outdoor Creativity Badge, Apr. 9, 9:00am – 12:00pm. Celebrate the natural world and be inspired to create art and interesting stories. Find out how to make your own special place in nature whether you live in the city or country. Girls who participate will receive the Outdoor Creativity badge at the end of the event. Must be a Junior Girl Scout to attend.

Eco-Explorer Try-it, Apr. 30, 9:30am – 12:00pm – Habitats are where it’s at, and the Tacoma Nature Center is just the right place to explore outdoors and indoors and find out about the animals that make this wetland and forest habitat their home. Play games, hike, and make a simple birdfeeder to take home. Girls who participate will receive the Eco-Explorers Try-It at the end of the event. Must be a Brownie Girl Scout to attend. $10.00 per girl, adults free

- The Beauty of Bugs, April 1 – May 28
- Artist reception April 1, 5:00-7:00pm
Bugs outnumber us humans 200 million to one and all animals combined four to one, yet most of us do our level best to avoid seeing them. However, a local photographer, Steve Russell, has made a point to see them and will be sharing his mesmerizing macro images of local bugs during this exhibit. Come see these incredible insects and spiders like you’ve never seen them before and marvel at these natural wonders likely living in your own backyard.
