Historic quilt hung at Pioneer Middle School

March 29, 2011 By Nancy Covert

By Nancy Covert

The multi-colored quilt that was hung on March 17 at Pioneer Middle School is the latest piece of student-crafted fabric art to be added to the growing collection of similar projects in Steilacoom Historical School District.

Quilts, depicting a variety of historic themes, are on display around Steilacoom, from Town Hall to the Steilacoom Historical Museum. Since 2004-05 student-made works also are on display at Cherrydale, Saltar’s Point Elementary, and now at Pioneer School.

“The quilt,” says Pioneer teacher Linda Petersen, “is a contribution and a tribute to our educational community. It’s a gift from the students who created it.”

The quilt, pieced together by Petersen’s students, features a panoramic view of Pioneer School—from its 1916 origin to the new school, built in 2008 at Northwest Landing. The project was completed this past winter, framed and hung earlier this month. In addition to the quilt Petersen created two coffee-table-sized books that tell about the quilt’s creation.

For years to come, Petersen muses, students will long remember what they created. She extends an invitation to former Pioneer School students, and community members to visit the school to view this cloth masterpiece.
