Several new members have been named to the City of University Place Economic Development Commission (EDC), the advisory board that supports the implementation of the City’s Economic Development Strategic Action Plan.
In January, the City Council appointed new members Chris Nye, Peggy Rose Webster, Rick Larson and Ron Kent to the Commission, which serves as an important sounding board for topics and issues related to economic development in U.P. They join returning members Dirk Thompson, John Siridakis, Matt Allen, Ruthann Reim McCaffree and Rich Berndt. The commission’s 10th position, reserved for a representative from the University Place/Fircrest Division of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, is currently vacant. The Chamber is working to identify and nominate a candidate to fill this position.
Because both the EDC and the Planning Commission have several new members, the University Place City Council invited members from each commission to participate in a joint meeting in January to give new – and returning — members on each commission an overview on the history of Town Center as well as current issues related to that project and other economic development initiatives. The session was well-received by all, especially the newcomers. “It was good to get an understanding of where we came from and to see where we can go from here,” says Kent.
The Economic Development Commission meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month, 7:30 a.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room, City Complex (3715 Bridgeport Way W.)
