JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. –The Headquarters of the 62nd Medical Brigade, and the brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), will be re-united with friends and families at a “welcome home” ceremony late Monday night, March 28, at the McChord Fitness Center on JBLM McChord Field. Over the past several weeks about 100 Soldiers assigned to the 62nd Medical Brigade headquarters have redeployed.
The 62nd Medical Brigade deployed to Afghanistan in April, 2010, and provided command and control for a 2,000 service member joint task force responsible for 32 medical treatment facilities. They provided veterinary, dental, blood, medical logistics, preventive medicine, medical laboratory and area medical support services throughout the Combined Joint Operating Area Afghanistan (CJOA-A).
The task force elements saw more than 6,000 trauma patients, with an overall survival rate of 96% for all in-theater U.S. military casualties.
62nd Medical Brigade Soldiers played a critical role in establishing 20 new medical services throughout the theater of operations, including a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) program incorporating specialty referral services, medical review and reporting, and pre-deployment training materials for ensuring medical readiness. They also partnered with international forces to provide medical services to the local population.
The brigade commander also served as the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) surgeon, with oversight of all U.S. military medical treatment facilities and capabilities in theater.
