By Kurt Sample, Coordinator, Lakewood’s Promise
Lakewood’s Promise is looking for 25 businesses/organizations to paint little red wagons to show their support for the youth in our community.
Paint Your Wagon is a city-wide art contest. The $200 entry fee will provide for participants a new-in-the-box little red wagon which can be “painted” (modified, decorated, souped-up, electrified, welded, sandblasted, antiqued, etc..) to best represent the business/organization sponsoring the wagon. The wagon is put on display at the place-of-business for visitors to admire. Pictures are also put online for each wagon. As each wagon comes online they receive special attention from Lakewood’s Promise and our online news media.
In June, wagons are gathered together for a celebration and judges’ awards at City Hall and later, they are displayed again at SummerFEST to be judged and voted upon by Lakewood’s youth. After SummerFEST, the wagons are returned to their sponsors.
The little red wagon, the symbol of America’s Promise, and Lakewood’s Promise represents that adults are “pulling together” to provide our youth with the Five Promises –
- Caring Adults
- Safe Places
- A Healthy Start
- Effective Education, and
- Opportunities to Help Others.
“Painting” a wagon is an awesome opportunity for a business/organization to show that they are on board and committed to keeping Lakewood one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the nation.
