Now, where were we?? That’s right, we were talking about mystery novels before we got sidetracked by local authors. Well, there is one local author who writes great contemporary suspense novels…Ridley Pearson.
There is an old saying imparted to every aspiring writer: Write what you know. Ridley Pearson’s Lou Boldt Seattle Police series takes that saying to heart. The opening novel “UNDERCURRENTS” uses the Pacific Science Center’s model of Puget Sound to help Boldt solve the mystery of where a body went into the Sound. Is that fact important?? You bet it is!
Subsequent stories have taken readers down to the docks, where container ships unload a container of illegal Asian immigrants, up to the storage lockers above the I-5 freeway at the south end of Boeing Field, and the Seattle Underground among other very recognizable locations. Tough police procedures coupled with very real, tender sympathies make these novels both entertaining and believable.
These nine stories are about a place and time we all know. What Pearson does is make us look at both the place and the time in a different way, which also makes us look at ourselves at different way.
