The Town of Steilacoom is taking delivery of 130 bare-rooted Northwest native plants on March 4. The following day, the trees and shrubs are to be planted at Steilacoom’s Fifth Street Waterway.
The three-hour planting session begins at 9 a.m. on March 5. Volunteers are invited to help with this community project, says Nancy Henderson, who coordinates many of the town’s park-related planting activities.
Native plant inventory consists of a dozen different species, purchased from Pierce County Conservation District, Varieties include Red Osier Dogwood, Vine Maple, Red Flowering Currant, Sitka Willow, Tall Oregon Grape, Mock Orange, Blue Elderberry, Peafruit Rose, Salmonberry, Serviceberry, Orange Honeysuckle and Evergreen Huckleberry.
Planning and preparation for the event is to be discussed at the Feb. 24 Parks and Trails meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
