Lakewood Women in Business

February 20, 2011 By Ben Sclair

Thirty three years ago a group of women organized Lakewood Women in Business. Its purpose was to help fellow women in business by sharing experiences, support each other and encourage other women.

Thursday, Feb. 17, a number of the current members gathered for a luncheon at Oakbrook Country Club to recall the history of the group and honor two of the original members; Mary Lou Sclair and Jean Kinkella.

Tish Andresen (left), currently president, recognized the two founders, commending them for taking part in the efforts to start the group back in 1978. At the time of the founding of Lakewood Women in Business, service clubs were the exclusive domain of men. Thus, the women felt it was imperative to organize into their own groups to foster their own efforts.

Although organizations like Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs now welcome both men and women, the group has continued meeting regularly for programs and social activities. Meetings are held at noon on the third Thursday of the month at Oakbrook. Any woman interested in the organization is welcome to attend a meeting.
