Steilacoom update, Feb. 11

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Parks Task Force – February 24, 2011 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall in the Map Room.
  • Planning Commission – February 14, 2011 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall

Preservation and Review Board – February 23, 2011 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall.

Council Future Agenda “Look-Ahead” Issues:

Copies of the Agenda and staff reports are available at all Town facilities once published. The Agenda and Council meeting minutes are posted to the Town’s official website.

1. Nuisance and Abatement procedures (Winter-Spring).

Parks Task Force Community Project:

On March 5, 2011, the Parks Task Force is sponsoring a Community Planting Project at the 5th Street Waterway located near Wallace Street. The event runs from 9 AM to noon. All are invited.

Pierce County Regional Council:

The General Assembly for the Pierce County Regional Council is scheduled for February 17, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Please RSVP directly to Toni Fairbanks at 798-7156 if you plan on attending.

Public Works:

Street and Storm Water Utility Crew:

The Street and Storm Water Crew:

-Cleared fallen trees on the right of way at 4th and Champion and worked with Hunter Tree Services to remove other dead or dangerous trees throughout Town.

– Performed right of way maintenance on the bulb-outs on Union Avenue.

– Staff and Gray and Osborne reviewed the preliminary plans for Starling Street in preparation for this project being put out to bid in the Spring. Staff is in the process of scheduling a project open house for the week of the 28th.

Electric Crew:

The Electric Crew:

– Potholed utilities on Starling Street and participated in the Starling Street preliminary plan review.

-Finished mounting a service on the west side of the Administration to provide additional power for the Farmers’ Market and other activities occurring on the multi-purpose court.

Water and Sewer Crew:

The Water/Sewer Crew:

– Potholed utilities on Starling Street and participated in the Starling Street preliminary plan review.

– Rebuilt the second pump at the Sunnyside Lift Station.

– Coordinated with and assisted Hunter Tree Service in removing the dangerous trees and Well #4.

Buildings and Grounds:

The Buildings and Grounds Crew:

-Worked at the Community Center with the Cedar Creek work crew to weed and bark the primary beds. (Next week they will be working at Town Hall and the Administration Building.)

– Performed building repairs and maintenance at the Community Center.

Other:

Steilacoom II Ferry welcome home sailing
The Steilacoom II ferry will depart at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19 from the Steilacoom terminal for its “welcome home” celebration sail. Boarding begins at 9:20 a.m. The ferry stop at the Anderson Island terminal at 9:50 a.m. to pick up residents and take them on an hour sail around their island while everyone enjoys coffee, cake, and various presenters. After the Anderson Island residents are returned at 11:00 a.m., the ferry will head back to Steilacoom. This is a walk-on sail only. Be sure to bundle up in case of cold weather!

Applicants sought for Surface Water Management board

Pierce County is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on the nine-member Surface Water Management Advisory Board. Advisory board members will be involved in such issues as storm drainage and surface water management, water quality, storm drainage plans, rate structures, capital improvement projects, financing and annual program goals for the Water Programs Division of Public Works and Utilities.

The mission of Surface Water Management (SWM) is to be a responsive service organization that efficiently addresses flood control, water quality and the preservation of natural drainage systems.

Meetings are held monthly. Advisory board members will be selected to represent each of the watersheds, and preference will be given to candidates living in unincorporated Pierce County. Surface Water Management will maintain a roster of applications to fill current and future vacancies on the board. These positions are not compensated.

Completed applications should be submitted to Harold Smelt, SWM Manager at Pierce County Water Programs, 2702 S. 42nd St. #201, Tacoma, WA 98409.
